{S1} Section One: General Group Questions

-- {S1.1} Admin, Group Structuring and Judging

Q: Who are the people in charge of the BFOI?
A: All current Admin are listed here on the 'About Us' page of the group.

Q: Who are the Judges?
A: The XO's of the BFOI make up the main 4 Judges. The XO's judge each round, with a 5th Judge who changes with every round.

Judging Procedures
Each Round is judged by the Exec Ranked Admin, and extra Judges are rotated in each round with the other group Admin to bring it up to Five judges per round.

Each entry is scored as follows:

:bulletgreen: Each judge scores on four categories worth five points each, totalling up to a maximum of 20 points.
:bulletgreen: The five Judges totals are then tallied together, totalling up to a maximum of 100 points.
:bulletgreen: The top scores until the cutoff point then pass into the next round.

-- In the event of a tie at the cut-off point, the Judges deliberate on the entries concerned and compare them against each other to determine the passing entry.
-- When Bonus Points are enabled, it is theoretically possible to score 105 points.
-- We use this judging system to avoid bias, as it takes three judges scoring unreasonably high for bias to actually take effect.

-- {S1.2} Contest Specific Questions

Q: What is the Battle Frontier - Ohana Islands?
A: Simply put, this is an art OCT (Original Character Tournament) based around Pokemon themed challenges and battles.

Q: I don't have WiFi! How can I battle?!
A: You're on Deviant ART. Creativity and art is all you need.

Q: What kind of art will be expected of me here?
A: Throughout the challenge, you'll be asked to draw a variety of things, from one-shot images, to sequential images, to comics. The rounds have been designed not only to be interesting, but to also provide you with a style/art challenge you may not be familiar with. OCTs are a great way to improve ones art, and for those who haven't tried certain things before, they'll come away with new knowledge. So in the end everybody wins, as long as you give it your all!

Q: I can't draw, can I do written entries instead?
A: Nope. This contest is for visual based media only.

Q: Can you give me your opinion on _______?
A: Ask the BFOI chatroom; the people who frequent there can often give you sound art advice and critiques.

Q: Can I tag-team with someone on the art?
A: No, sorry. All art must be your own, unless a challenge states otherwise.

Q: Can I join the Group??
A: Of course you can! The group is open to everyone. Just hit that 'Join' button and fill a Spectator Registry should you wish to observe and participate in mini contests and events!

Q: Where are the Ohana Islands?
A: In Pkmn world, they sit pretty much in the middle of the ocean between Kanto and Unova. In real world application, the Ohana Islands are based on Hawaii. We have a map here in the 'Resources and Refs' folder in the Gallery, and are always adding new pieces of Ref for you to familiarise yourselves with our Islands.

Q: What is the timeline for this group in relation to story and other OCTs?
A: For those concerned with the age of their characters and so on, the following is an approximate timeline of the group and our major affiliates;

xx10 - UBF Y1
xx11 - UBF Y2
xx11 - xx12 - BFOI Y1
xx12 - Hyperion
xx12 - xx13 - BFOI Y2

Q: Are there prizes for this contest?
A: Yes, however the Y2 Prize List is not yet confirmed, and is currently under review.

Some things to remember about any prizes offered:

:bulletblue: All prizes are offered out of goodwill by the admin and fellow members. We are spending our own time and money to offer incentives for you to compete other than bragging rights and free advertising.

:bulletblue: We do however, reserve the right to withold or reduce the value of prizes if there's not enough interest or activity to warrant awarding them.
As a secondary clause, brought in by the migration of people between groups during our Hiatus, it has been decided that to remain eligible for prizes, one must continue to be a member of the group at all times. This is non-negotiable.

-- {S1.3} Miscellaneous Group Questions

Q: Can I submit things from other groups to the BFOI?
A: No. To avoid multiple inbox spams, we only want BFOI related artwork to making it's way through to us. Anything that isn't BFOI at all will be declined. That doesn't mean you can't submit your BFOI art to other groups, however.

Q: The group always seems to update things in the future ~ what's going on?
A: The head of the BFOI, tazsaints and several of the admin team live in New Zealand, where the timezone sits at GMT+12 (+13 during Daylight Savings), so yes, we are a bit in the future, and somewhat timehaxx compared to the bulk of DA!

Q: How will the NZ Timezone affect deadlines?
A: We realise that NZ being ahead of everyone else means that many get anything up to 24 hours less than what the deadlines will say, so in the interest of being fair to everyone, ALL deadlines will be set in GMT, a median time that no one can argue with.

Q: What Pokemon can I expect to find around Ohana?
A: The following list is the 'What' and 'Where' of 'mon's you can find dotted around the islands.

{S2} Section Two: Group Quality Control Guidelines

-- {S2.1} Art Theft Definitions

Q: Why are you so strict on pictures? DA lets me have my pics up! You should too!
A: We are stricter than DA on Art Theft for your own good. We want to foster improvement and growth in all artists here, and you will learn nothing by cheating. We will NOT change our stance on this.

Art Theft is defined under the following:

Tracing: To directly copy by drawing lines on a new layer/piece of paper on top.

Recolouring: As the name suggests, this is simply replacing the colour of an existing piece.

Copying/Eyeballing: To reproduce an existing piece of art line for line (be it freehand or otherwise) making it difficult to distinguish from the original.

Insertion: Putting Screen Caps/Sprites/Official Art/Other Users Art in your own work, without permission. Without written permission from the corporations that own the characters/critters from Pokemon, you can NOT place them anywhere into your art.

Note that NONE of these are against using References and/or Free Resources (provided the rules on said Resource are followed, and credit is given where due).
Referencing is looking at a picture to make sure that you have markings/colours/general shape/posing/etc correct, and it is encouraged to use reference when creating all art, not just art for the BFOI. You learn NOTHING by cheating, whereas referencing is a learning tool.

-- {S2.2} Quality Control Definitions

All of the following clauses are valid reasons for an entry being denied into the group:

Contradiction Rule
If your application contradicts itself between the Form and Artist Comments.

Canon Character Interaction Rule
This should be kept to minimum and done only as neccessary ~ aka contacting a Professor/GL in your hometown.
EG: Being the spawn of a non-canon pairing or bf/gf of a canon character is NOT okay nor encouraged.

All Powerful Being Rule
The most powerful persons on the island are the leaders of Initiative and Valkyrie. No one should exceed this in any way.

Attempting to Sabotage the Main Plot
Anything that directly contradicts the group plot that has or has yet to be revealed.

Latent Powers
The character's powers are MORE impressive/stronger than the Pokemon Team. What use are the Pokemon if you're stronger than them?

Murderous Intentions
Not allowing them on the island is the only sensible option story-wise. We don't need mass-murderers.

Weapons Check
Anything big and/or destructive is 'confiscated'. There are no big swords, big guns, explosives/destructive magic.
:bulletblue: Note: To this end, small weapons, and/or things that are rarely seen, much less used are okay. While destructive weapons such as the above are banned, we are inclined to allow things such as cermonial weapons as those aren't for killing.

Shapeshifters:
No human dittos here. You have one alt form, that is it.

Anthro/Gijinkas/Pokemorphs:
These kind of characters are allowed, but ONLY as Pokemon hybrids. Real World animals are not allowed.
:bulletblue: You can refer to this useful guide here on what defines a Pokemorph character.

{S3} Section Three: Applications and Factions

-- {S3.1} General Application Rules

Q: Can I edit my form once submitted? And if so, when is it okay to do so?
A: Until the end of Y2 Round One, you may edit your form in any way (so long as it still adheres to the rules). After Round One, there will be no edits, bar allowances for localisation.

Q: Are self insert characters allowed?
A: Yes, just try to avoid Sue-dom though.

Q: Are anthro characters allowed?
A: See above in the QC section, under "Anthro/Gijinkas/Pokemorphs".

Q: Can my OC be from a made-up town?
A: No. Bar the Ohana Islands themselves, only canon towns and cities can be named. Canon loactions includes places named in the games, spin-off games (like Pkmn Conquest), or anime-exclusives.

Q: Can I edit the form?
A: To an extent. You can do a BG if you wish, but do not remove or cover any info tags, nor change the title bars of shape of the application itself in any way. Please refrain from using BG colours of the opposite faction to avoid confusion.

Q: How many outfits can my Trainer have?
A: As many as you like! Clothes don't make the Trainer, so you don't have to draw the default outfit every round, either. A default look is simply required as a base for other artists to work with.
Swimwear and casual summer-gear are highly recommended, and there is NO need for Winter Gear, as the Ohana Islands are Tropical, therefore always hot.

Q: Can I have a character affiliated with a 'bad-guy' team?
A: Yes, and no. Both Initiative and Valkyrie are legitimate corporations operating within the Ohana Islands, and thus want nothing to do with any of the villainous teams operating beyond the Islands.
In Y2, they are sponsoring Trainers for the Battle Frontier Commemorative Cup, and thus perform extensive background checks before agreeing to sponsor a Trainer.
Initiative will deny ALL Trainers currently on active duty/payroll with a designated villainous team. They will however, take ex-members who are looking to reform and aid them in reintegrating into society.
Valkyrie will not immediately deny Trainers currently on active duty/payroll with a designated villainous team, however, should a team uniform be worn in public or a crime committed, VI will instantly turns its back on the offender, deny all involvement and essentially leave them out in the cold.

What this means for you as a creator means that you may have a character affiliated with a badguy team (within Valkyrie), but are not allowed to be 'evil' beyond flashbacks/recounts of your characters history (flashbacks okay within both groups).
We are not interested in villains attempting to overtake the group and derail where the group story is going, thus this rule being in place.

Q: Can I use ______?
A: If it's not on our banned list then you may.
Banned Pokemon are: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latias, Latios, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Giratina, Cresselia, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Tornadus, Thundurus, Reshiram, Zekrom, Landorus, Kyurem, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect.

:bulletblue: Note: Rotom is not banned, however it can NOT switch forms during the contest.

:bulletblue: Currently ALL Gen 6 Pokémon are banned until the games launch in October 2013.

Q: Are my Pokemon allowed to change Form during the contest?
A: Yes and no.
Regional/terrain differences are not allowed to change during the Contest, this focuses on Gastrodon, Basculin, Burmy, Wormadam, etc.
Pkmn that change form with items to simultaneously change type/stats/moves are not allowed to change form during the contest. This bars Rotom from switching form during the contest.
Dream World Abilities are not blocked in Y2, so Zen Mode Darmanitan is now valid under current rules.
Castform is only allowed to charnge form in battle, and in reaction to weather conditions (ie: if the Round is listed as having 'Sunny Day' in effct, then Castform is by default in its Sunny Form)
Seasonal Pkmn such as Sawsbuck and Deerling may change in reaction to the seasons changing and to extreme weather, however, due that Ohana is a Tropical Region, Summer is the deafult on all 'mons, as the temperature never drops to the winter conditions the pkmn are native to.

Q: What colour variations are allowed with my Pokemon?
A: Colour Variations allowed are Normal, Shiny, Pinkan, Albino & Melano. Anything outside of these colour ranges or used incorrectly (such as 'half' albino) will not be accepted.

Q: What body variations are allowed with my Pokemon?
A: Body Variations can vary so widely in both size (extra small to lighthouse sized) and shape (normal to buff/toned) that it can be hard to regulate this. We ask that you keep your Pkmn within acceptable standards of size (eg: a dog pkmn has a size it would stop growing at, however some reptiles continue to grow their entire lives). We also ask that you do NOT add 'features' to Pkmn, this includes, but is not limited to: Breasts, Genetalia, and parts from other Pokemon. If they don't have them on the official art, don't add them.

Q: Can my Pokemon have battlescars?
A: Yes, scars are a completely normal thing to happen to anyone, human or otherwise.

Q: If my Pkmn can't be that colour normally, then can I paint or dye them?
A: Short answer is no. Full body paint or dye that completely changes the general appearance to get around the colour rule is definitely not allowed.

Q: Can my Pokemon have extra accesories (such as a ribbon or a collar or clothing) as well as their battle items?
A: Yes, as long as they don't grant extra bonuses on top of the Battle Item.

Q: What moves are my Pokemon allowed to have?
A: ALL moves must be legally obtainable within the games. This includes breeding and event Pkmn (such as Surfing Pikachu). However, you cannot combine event-only moves (eg: you cannot have a Pikachu with BOTH Fly & Surf).

Q: Can my Pokemon have Dreamworld abilities?
A: Yes, they can.

Q: Do I have to fill all the Pokemon boxes?
A: Trainers are not required to have a full team of six Pkmn, you may choose to carry anywhere between 2-6 with you.

Q: Can I have a pet Pkmn that doesn't battle?
A: Trainers and NPCs are also allowed ONE pet with them. This pokemon CAN NOT be used in main contest events, under threat of instant disqualification from the Round. Pet can only be a small Pokemon at first or second stage evolutions only.

Q: Will I be able to switch out members of my Team at a later date during the contest?
A: No. The 7 pkmn (6 Team & 1 Pet) that a Trainers brings to the Islands will be the only ones able to be used. We are counting the Islands as unable to easily access to the Pkmn PC Storage Network due to the distance between both Kanto and Unova, so you need to choose your Pkmn carefully.

Q: Can I have a Pkmn evolve during the contest?
A: At this stage, no -- but it is not a complete impossibility in the future.

Rules regarding Trainers from the Ransei Region:

:bulletblue: Ransei trainers are limited to just 3 Pokemon since trainers from that region typically only use one.

:bulletblue: Ransei trainers cannot have modern Pokeballs, additionally they are expected to have very limited knowledge with technology.

:bulletblue: Pokemorphs/genetic hybrids from Ransei are not allowed - This goes hand in hand with the fact that the entire region has shut itself off from modern technology, this includes medicine and most advanced sciences.

:bulletblue: The "no weapons rule" still applies to trainers from Ransei; no samurai swords!

-- {S3.2} Spectator Questions

Q: What is an NPC/Spectator?
A: NPC stands for Non Playable Character, the 'Play' part reffering to participation in the main contest. NPCs do not compete in the main event or have subsequently not passed a round of the main event, and as such, 'Spectate' the goings-on in the group. All spectators are free to partake in memes, activities, side/story events and mini contests continuously held in the group.
A Spectator Form is a must for those who wish to be involved with the BFOI, but not compete in the main contest.

Q: How many characters can I have in the group?
A: There is a global cap of THREE per person. We believe this more than enough to Role Play with, and any more than that just begins to spam the group.

Q: Why can I not have more than two Pokémon on the NPC App?
A: Because with enrolling as an NPC or side character, you will not need a full team to solve the challenges present in the main events.

-- {S3.3} Frontier Initiative Info & Guidelines

"Due to the damage in Hero City, the Battle Frontier relocated to Diamond City on Allotrope Island, and formed a new directive dedicated to recruiting and training People and Pokemon to better handle disasters through specialised training. This new direction proved successful and popular with people right from your everyday Citizen, to Trainers to even the Government, and caused a massive influx of Trainers eager to compete under Initiative's name and many were also keen for education and further Training, cementing FI's position as Ohana's Premier Trainer Institution.
The Initative is also interested in developing clean technology and preserving the Islands natural resources, as opposed to abusing them. They strongly disagree with the methods Valkyrie Industries uses to achieve their goals, and as such are at odds with the company."

Frontier Specific Restrictions:
:bulletorange: Initiative has no tolerance for anyone on Active Payroll with a 'Villainous Team'. Strict police checks are in place for all trainers arriving into Diamond City and those with a questionable past will be turned away unless they have proven to have wiped thier hands clean of that business. You can not 'trick' or 'bribe' your way in.

-- {S3.4} Valkyrie Industries Info & Guidelines

"A growing industrial group from the Unova region that won the bid for the Reconstruction and Salvage rights of Ohana's main island. Since then, they have arrived on Ohana and, in an almost hostile takeover, acquired most of the remaining land and had all locals relocated to the other islands - though through this they have made large amounts of progress into re-establishing the stricken Hero City, restoring the destroyed landscapes of the island, and have begun working on structural strengthening in all the remaining towns and cities.
They have established a headquarters on the Valhalla Plains, north of what remains of Volcano Town, making vast use of the natural gases from the newly formed geysers there to power their advanced steam-based technology. They seem to be at odds with the Frontier Initiative - believing they were too slow to act in regards to last years mountains of disasters that devastated the once peaceful islands."

Valkyrie Specific Restrictions:
:bulletblue: While Valkyrie is a lot looser in terms of its competitors pasts than Initiative - they will not tolerate people of 'evil' teams that strive to disrupt the contest. Therefore people blalantly strolling around in evil team uniforms will be punted off the island, as will those caught committing crimes.

-- {S3.5} Faction Description & Clarification

First and foremost, is that there's no hate between these two companies. There's a rivalry in terms of the fact that they're both sponsoring trainers in the new challenge, but there's none of this junk about 'lost territory' or that Valkyrie pushed Iniative into a corner, etc etc. They're two very different businesses and are nowhere near the same market.

"But the Valkies bought out the Big Island and kicked everyone off it! That's totally evil!"

Not entirely true, as they only bought out sections of the residential zones to get people to move away, and directly forced buyouts on those who refused to leave despite safety concerns and new regulations condemning many homes and buildings.
The entire Island is one big construction zone now - Hero City, Paradise Parks and a new Volcano Town are being re/built and any city NOT damaged in Y1's events has been going through structural strengthening, not unlike when a building undergoes Quake Strengthening.
But eventually, as towns and cities become safe, they will again let people migrate back home, and begin the process anew on the other islands.

"Okay fine, but Valkyrie lets bad guys compete in the challenge! That's totally evil!"

Actually, they don't. Did you read the info on the VI app at all?
Directly pulled from the app is: "While Valkyrie is a lot looser in terms of its competitors pasts than Initiative - they will not tolerant people of 'evil' teams that strive to disrupt the contest. Therefore people blalantly strolling around in evil team uniforms will be punted off the island."
So in other words, ONLY if you keep it under wraps are you allowed to have a sketchy past and keep in contact with your boss.

"Well, Valkyrie uses Black as a main colour! That's totally evil!"

You're kidding right? We chose black and white for the companies as they're opposites. These two companies are like two sides of the same coin, really. Not convinced? Let me continue further.

The best way to describe these two companies, and how they regard one another, is to imagine Disaster as a Disease.

Initiative aims to be the Cure while Valkyrie aims to be the Vaccine.

Both have the same goal of fixing the problem, but wildly different views in how best to achieve such an aim. Initiative believe that not every crisis is foreseeable, so one must be able and ready to respond when crisis does erupt, so they teach readiness.
Valkyrie believes that FI's view is not the case, and argues the disasters that occured in Y1 were all preventable, thus they teach vigilance.

But what does this mean for you, as a sponsored Trainer with either company?

Each side will have slight and sometimes not-so-slight variances throughout the contest that will challenge you in different ways. Initiative is ultimately a school at it's core, and you may be likely to see a few 'community' challenges whereas Valkyrie may end up getting you to help with their construction and business work. At this stage, who knows what could be asked of you ~

What you need to decide on is which side you wish to represent in the Y2 Challenge. Do you agree with Initiative's Ideals more? Or does the Truth that Valkyrie bring to the table resonate more closely instead?

{S4} Section Four: Chat Room Rules and Regulations

-- {S4.1} Overall Chatroom Rules

All activity within the chat rooms is to be PG-13 as all times. This includes the linking in of any material that does not meet this criteria.

There is monitoring on the use of swearing and posting certain icons. To keep this a friendly environment for all age groups, we ask that you do not use words or icons that would be considered derogatory toward race, sexual orientation, sexual harassment, and/or explicit descriptions of genitalia.

In addition to this, we have a ZERO tolerance on the following:

-- Pornography and violent images of an offensive nature/Gore.
-- Sexual harassment of any chat member, regardless of whether you consider them to be a friend or not.
-- Images and/or statements that may cause emotional stress. (Emotional triggers).
-- Any form of disrespectful conduct.

Above all, exercise common sense and respect the admin and their decisions.

-- {S4.2} Main Chatroom Specifics

In addition to the overall rules, the Main chat has a few rules specific to itself:

:bulletgreen: No Solicitations - The chat room is not a marketplace, so any form of monetary solicitation, be it asking for payment or donations, discussing commission pricing, in actual money or DA Points is not allowed within the chat, and must be discussed outside the chatroom.

:bulletgreen: English Only - Seeing as the BFOI and by extension, the chatrooms, are based in the English language, we ask that you refrain from excessively posting in other languages, as this disrupts the chatroom and is very rude.

-- {S4.3} RolePlay Chatroom Specifics

:bulletgreen: GM Respect - When a GM (Game Master) is running a Role Play, they are essentially the Boss of the Room (second only to BFOI Admin), and therefore their rules apply to all members in the room participating. If you ignore their rules or disrupt the RP, they have have every right to kick you, or call in an Admin to do so.

:bulletgreen: General Politeness - This goes without saying that RP is not meant to be a miserable experience, so anyone making this the case will be promptly asked to leave.

If you have any other questions NOT on this list, feel free to note the group, or leave a comment on the front page. One of the Admin will get back to you asap.

Okay, I"m a bit confused since there's only the FAQ for interested newbies. So, if I want to join, I click 'join', and fill out a spectator app. Then when a contest/round/something comes around I can make a full OC app for the event, right?
